The Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, are a spectacular natural light phenomenon that occurs when energetic particles from the Sun collide with Earth's atmosphere. This happens in the upper polar regions, between roughly 80 and 500 kilometers above the surface, where electrons and protons interact with atmospheric gases. The Northern Lights appear as dancing waves of color—most often green, but sometimes shades of red, purple, or blue.
